We have heard countless times about the things that damage the colour of our teeth: coffee, tea, smoking. Experts reveal what exactly causes teeth to darken. Tobacco smoke contains two substances that make teeth change colour. Although nicotine is actually colourless, it turns yellow when it bonds with oxygen molecules. Tar, as a residue of smoked tobacco, is naturally dark and settles on the surface of the teeth, explains Sandra Skuodait\u0117, Dentist and Endodontist at the Prosthetics and Implantology Clinic in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Teeth discolour really fast<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>According to the expert, smoking cigarettes, cigars or chewing tobacco causes teeth to turn yellow or cover with dark pigment deposits in a very short time, and after a few years, smokers complain of their teeth being almost brown. \u201cCigarette smoking reduces saliva production which leads to dry mouth, faster formation of tartar and the development of periodontitis. The chemicals in cigarettes damage the surface of the teeth causing erosion, and for those who use chewing tobacco, this damage is more than four times greater,\u201d says the dentist. When the dentine is damaged, it becomes less resistant to the acids in natural foods and drinks and to bacteria which cause tooth decay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>According to the doctor, tooth discolouration is much less common with alternative, smoke-free products: \u201cA study conducted by British American Tobacco scientists showed that electronic cigarettes and other heated tobacco devices have a much lower impact on tooth colour than regular cigarettes,\u201d says Sandra\u00a0Skuodait\u0117.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Irreversible damage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>According to the dentist, hot tobacco smoke is harmful not only to the oral mucosa, the heat also opens the dentinal tubules in the teeth and makes it easy for pigment to penetrate them, especially in areas where there are cracks in the tooth enamel or enamel wear. For this reason, if you quit smoking but do not take any measures to remove pigment deposits from the surface of your teeth or whiten them, your teeth will remain discoloured permanently. However, according to the doctor, in order to restore the white colour of your teeth, you should first quit smoking and start having regular appointments with your dentist and dental hygienist. Professional teeth cleaning should be performed every six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Oral care at home<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>For a more beautiful smile at home, dentists recommend proper dental care at home, i.e. brushing regularly with a soft toothbrush and toothpaste for two minutes in the morning and evening, cleaning between teeth with dental floss or interdental brushes, and cleaning the tongue with a special scraper. It is recommended to occasionally use special toothpastes that reduce the accumulation of tobacco pigment. If your teeth are very yellow because of smoking, it may be recommended to use special teeth whitening products designed for home and approved by clinical trials: \u201cWhitening toothpaste, whitening strips or trays can be used for whitening. However, to keep it safe, these products should be used as directed and according to the instructions. Another home remedy is brushing your teeth with a toothbrush and a drop of lemon essential oil added to the toothpaste,\u201d says Sandra\u00a0Skuodait\u0117.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><br>Common mistakes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>However, the doctor points out that careless whitening at home can also be harmful: \u201cCareless use of folk remedies for teeth whitening, such as baking soda, lemon or lemon peel, rinsing with hydrogen peroxide, and regular use of whitening (abrasive) toothpastes can cause irreversible damage to teeth,\u201d says the professional.
