The condition of the gums during pregnancy. What do you need to know?

For many, pregnancy is a joyful time of anticipation, bringing loads of changes in all areas of life. A woman’s body is no exception. Unfortunately, not all changes are pleasant: hormonal fluctuations, morning sickness, changes in eating habits and other factors have a negative impact on the oral cavity. What are the threats to the gums during pregnancy and how can their condition be improved?
Important for the baby too
Jurgita Savickienė, a Dentist at the Prosthetics and Implantology Clinic (PIK), says that pregnancy presents many challenges for the body. “Due to the influence of hormones, the volume of blood in the body of the expectant mother doubles. This means that more blood flows to the tissues of the mouth. These hormonal changes can cause inflammation and bleeding of the gums. In addition, the acidic environment in the mouth can have a negative effect on tooth enamel, increasing the risk of tooth decay and tooth sensitivity during pregnancy.”
She also points out that taking care of your oral health is important not only for oneself but also for the health of the unborn baby. “Although periodontal disease is a threat to everyone without exception, these infections are even more dangerous for pregnant women: if left untreated, they can have a negative impact on the baby and increase the risk of premature birth.”
A doctor at the PIK clinic shares four tips to help you take care of your gums during pregnancy:
- Take care of your mouth and teeth throughout your pregnancy. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, use dental floss and mouthwash.
- If your mouth is acidic (this happens after eating and drinking, as well as after vomiting), do not rush to brush your teeth, as you risk damaging the tooth enamel. Rinse your mouth with water and wait half an hour before brushing your teeth.
- Your gums may be bleeding due to improper oral care: using a toothbrush that is too hard or flossing roughly. Therefore, choose a soft toothbrush and use dental floss carefully so as not to damage your gums.
- To protect your gums from inflammation, use an antibacterial toothpaste and an alcohol-free mouthwash.
These preventive tips will definitely help you maintain healthy gums and feel great. However, if you are faced with real problems, you will need professional help. If your gums bleed constantly or very intensely, are swollen, or you feel pain or other symptoms, do not wait and see a specialist as soon as possible.
Only experienced periodontists work at the PIK clinic, who will take care of your health effectively, painlessly and fast!
